about

(roo-SAHL-kee): the sirens, wood nymphs, water spirits of the Slavic mythology; spinners who govern fertility, the seasons, the moon; spirits of women who died too soon; mermaids who dwell below the waves, known to lure passersby with song and hold them there.

Often beautiful, sometimes terrifying, the legend of the Rusalki envelops all faces of the feminine.

Rusalki was a group of 5 women based in Santa Fe, NM, singing traditional and contemporary music from Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. The music is characterized by multi-part, often dissonant harmonies, ornamented vocalization, and percussion instruments native to Eastern Europe (including doumbek, frame drum, riq, and zills) which are often played in odd time signatures. Our love and respect for Balkan music is brought alive by our many musical influences including Blues, Jazz, and American Folk.

They are no longer performing, but Nicolle Jensen still plays and records locally in Santa Fe with her new ensemble, Rumelia.
